The US State Department plans to provide aid of US$252m to the Northern Triangle countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, according to a 24 June press statement from US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo. The aim of the assistance is to boost prosperity and security in the countries in order to decrease illegal immigration to the US. A portion of the funds will also be used for humanitarian purposes, assisting with the emergency response following tropical storm Amanda. Since the aid was announced, a new migrant caravan bound for the US has departed San Pedro Sula in the north of Honduras.
