The Caribbean Council was pleased to host another informative roundtable event and networking session with H.E. Mr. Edmund G. Hinkson, S.C., newly appointed High Commissioner for Barbados to the United Kingdom, and his senior team from the High Commission.
Speaking to members of the Council, the High Commissioner highlighted in his remarks the impressive economic turnaround in Barbados and the projections for economic growth now rising to 3% or greater for this year and beyond.
Discussion centred around:
Economic Growth and Stability: Barbados has experienced 19 quarters of growth; debt to GDP reduction from 179% to 93.3% and aims for 60% by 2035.
Infrastructure Development: Major projects include airport upgrades and new hotels; with over 30,000 housing units needed urgently.
Climate Resilience Initiatives: Innovative policies include debt-to-nature clauses for disaster recovery, Green bonds, and plans for coastal protection.
Tourism Expansion: New hotel projects and tourism attractions, with record tourism numbers at 727,310 stayover tourists in the last year and massive investment into the sector underway.
Investment Climate: Barbados is listed as fully cooperative with international tax treaties and emphasises fair treatment for investors with strong public-private partnerships fostering growth; with new policies to offer tax rebates for companies operating in target sectors such as film production, advanced manufacturing, AI and life sciences.
