The Caribbean Council was pleased to host a Members’ Roundtable with His Excellency Joseph Fisher MBE, British High Commissioner to Guyana, Non-Resident Ambassador to Suriname, and UK Ambassador to CARICOM.
Key Highlights
The discussion centred on Guyana’s rapid development and the opportunities for UK businesses to engage with and contribute to its growth.
The High Commissioner described a country undergoing extraordinary transformation, underpinned by an ambitious national development vision and strong economic growth. He noted the strong appetite within the Guyanese private sector to connect with UK investors and partners.
The UK and Guyana enjoy a modern and deepening partnership. The British Chamber of Commerce in Guyana now counts more than sixty members, three of the Big Four largest professional services and accounting firms are established in the country, and UK Export Finance capacity for Guyana has been increased to up to £3 billion. A UK-funded hospital stands as a flagship of the relationship.
Priority Sectors
- Connectivity and aviation: The expansion of Cheddi Jagan International Airport as a regional hub, together with the associated supply chain.
- Roads and bridges: UK-supported road links and significant scope to improve road safety.
- Housing: A drive to expand the housing stock, with modular construction a likely route, alongside related needs in drainage, power transmission, and design.
- Healthcare: New hospital construction and the development of digital healthcare.
- Defence, creative, and agriculture: Opportunities in defence exports and training, particularly maritime; the growth of the creative or “orange” economy, including film; and significant potential in agriculture and agro-processing, given the country’s fertile land.
- Education: Partnerships between UK and Guyanese institutions.
The event concluded with a call to strengthen collaboration between the UK and Guyana, including opportunities for investment and business partnerships.
