From the UK to Latin America and the Caribbean: Unlocking Growth Opportunities
Hosted by IDB Invest at the QEII Centre in London. The Caribbean Council was proud to be an event partner alongside FCDO, UK Export Finance and the Department for Business and Trade. The event brought together 200 business leaders, government representatives and development partners to explore opportunities across the region.
Key Themes
The event marked a strategic shift from development-led engagement towards greater investment, commercial partnership and private capital mobilisation. Latin America and the Caribbean is a resilient market of 670 million people. Electricity demand is projected to rise by 48 percent by 2030. IDB Invest supports UK companies to navigate regional markets, structure financing and manage risk, drawing on more than six decades of local experience.
Development Finance
IDB Invest delivered a record 13.1 billion dollars in total activity in 2025, including 7.7 billion dollars mobilised from private investors. The focus is moving beyond standalone transactions to building investable markets through project preparation, guarantees and shared due diligence. The Originate-to-Share model aggregates smaller opportunities into sizes suitable for institutional capital. This work follows a 3.5 billion dollar capital increase and deepening partnership with the UK.
Priority Sectors
- Energy and infrastructure. Power, transport, logistics, water and sanitation.
- Digital economy. Digital infrastructure, fintech and improved connectivity.
- Agribusiness and financial inclusion. Global food production alongside SME finance opportunities.
- Critical minerals. Copper, lithium and nickel. Success depends on sound regulation, stakeholder engagement, environmental safeguards and community trust.
UK businesses are encouraged to engage early, partner locally and work with development finance institutions. Stronger collaboration between the UK and the region will deliver commercially viable projects with long-term development impact.
