A seven-strong UK delegation comprising companies from construction, engineering, education and specialist financing and procurement engaged in a busy programme of meetings with leading private sector companies, senior officials in Government and with local partner organisations such as the KKF. The delegation was warmly welcomed and hosted at a business-to -business event with over 80 Surinamese businesses represented.
With a new Government elected in May this year, a commitment last October by Total to extract the 760m barrels of oil it has identified in Block 58 with an investment of over US$10bn into the country, and a new announcement from Petronas to develop their block with a floating LNG facility eagerly anticipated in 2026, Suriname is set to follow in the economic footsteps of its neighbour, Guyana, with strong private sector confidence already very much in evidence about the coming economic boom and reflected in local plans for construction of new hotels, conference centres, and apartment blocks in the next 18 months.
We are grateful for the support and partnership of the UK’s Honorary Consul to Suriname, Kathleen Healy and Suriname’s Honorary Consul to the UK, Amwed Jethu for the mission – and also of course to HE Jane Miller, the UK’s non-resident Ambassador.
Our sincere gratitude to Suriname and Investment and Trade Agency SITA & Suriname’s Chamber of Commerce KKF for their partnership.
The Caribbean Council has been working with Suriname since 2005, and it was a great honour to be the first British delegation of this kind to visit the country, and we will be back very soon.
If you would like to find out more about the opportunities for your company in Suriname – please do get in touch.
