The Caribbean Council was pleased to host a members’ roundtable with El Salvador’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Adriana Mira, alongside the UK and Salvadoran Ambassadors.
El Salvador is positioning itself as a secure, stable and competitive investment and trade hub, one of Central America’s fastest-growing economies, with a strengthened security environment, dollarised currency, unrestricted fund transfers, and legal stability agreements for investors. The government consults the private sector monthly and offers a public–private partnership framework.
Priority sectors
- Manufacturing & exports: Preferential access to 1.2 billion consumers via 41 trade agreements; 20+ free zones supporting automotive, pharma, electronics, aerospace and food industries.
- San Salvador redevelopment: Hotel, housing and real estate projects with tax incentives including 15-year income-tax exemptions for qualifying high-rise developments.
- Logistics & connectivity: Port expansion, airport upgrades, and pursuit of direct UK air links.
- Energy: Solar, natural-gas storage, water infrastructure, and long-term consideration of small modular nuclear reactors.
- Digital & emerging industries: Software, digital assets and business services.
- Tourism: Renewed growth driven by improved security.
Education and skills are central to the investment proposition: 1,000 schools being upgraded, 32,000 technical/professional graduates in 2025, and partnerships including a proposed memorandum with the University of Cambridge.
The discussions focussed on bilateral trade and UK engagement, including UK Export Finance support and potential business delegations
