Date: 27th September 2016. 16.00-18.00
Venue: Savills, 33 Margaret Street, London, W1G 0JD
On Tuesday 27th September, The Caribbean Council organised an exciting business seminar on Tuesday 27th September which was attended by a very high level delegation from Cuba’s financial and banking sector.
The delegation was led by Cuban Central Bank Vice-President Arnaldo Alayon who was accompanied by the Presidents of the four main banks of the Cuban commercial banking system:
- Jose Lazaro Alaris: President, Banco Internacional de Comercio S.A.
- Rene Lazo: President Banco Nacional de Cuba (BNC)
- Luis Mario Salce: President Banco Financiero Internacional (BFI)
- Manuel Vale: President Banco Exterior de Cuba (BEC)
The discussions about the the opportunities and challenges facing Cuba’s banking sector during the meeting were both helpful and thought-provoking. The question-and-answer session that followed the panel discussion covered some particularly interesting topics, and it was fascinating to hear such a range of opinions brought to the fore.
By way of background, the delegation was visiting London as part of a programme to provide support to the Cuban government relating to their approach and policy to financial regulation and supervision, following on from a Memorandum of Understanding on financial services between the UK and Cuba when the then Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond visited the island in April.
