Date: 7 March 2016

Time: 17.00 – 18.30

Venue: Bird & Bird LLP offices, 15 Fetter Lane, EC4A 1JP London, United Kingdom

The Caribbean Council organised a round table meeting with the Governor of Barbados’ Central Bank, Dr DeLisle Worrell, on Monday 7 March at 17.00.

Dr Worrell gave attendees a presentation on Barbados’ current economic performance and future outlook. He also provided an update on the Central Bank’s monetary and fiscal policies and its activities to promote monetary stability, foster the development of capital markets, and assist in the country’s economic development programme.

A round-table discussion followed the presentation, and companies that attended were able to introduce their businesses to the Central Bank Governor and raised a number of issues affecting their commercial relations with Barbados.

By way of background, the Prime Minister of Barbados, Freundel Stuart, has recently said that his government is continuing to diversify the economy to ensure that the country is not dependent on any one sector and is working on increasing tourism traffic from different markets, as well as developing new renewable energy sources and the cultural industries.

The Barbados economy is estimated to have grown by 0.5% in 2015, thanks mainly to a strong tourism performance with a 13% increase in airlift from major source markets. Additionally, during 2015, further progress was made in the use of solar panels for power generation by homes and businesses. Total generating capacity now stands at 9.4 megawatts, a growth of 48% during the past year.

After the meeting, attendees had the opportunity to enjoy a networking & wine session.
