Completing the third and final phase of the Bosforo solar energy project, electrical power producer AES Corporation, in partnership with Guatemalan Corporacion Multi Inversiones (CMI), inaugurated its 10th 10MW solar power plant in El Salvador in the Municipality of Guazapa. With a total installed capacity of 100MW of clean energy, which will be transferred to the network managed by AES Solutions, the Bosforo project is valued at US$160m. The photovoltaic project was initiated as a part of AES’ plan to either close down or sell some of its energy plants that operate on fossil fuels, with the aim of reducing the company’s CO2 emissions by 175,000 tons. AES solar plants are now located in Apopa, Nejapa, Santa Ana, Salitrillo, Sonsonate and Guazapa. AES Chief Operating Officer Bernard Da Santos is quoted as saying that “Bosforo brings to El Salvador lower generation costs, renewable energy, a substitution of and contribution to the reduction of carbon emissions.”
