Chinese consortium wins US$1.42bn tender for fourth bridge over Panama Canal

A consortium consisting of China Construction Communication Company and China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd. has been selected by the Ministry of Public Works to build the fourth bridge over the Panama Canal. The Ministry hosted a public ceremony for the four pre-qualified companies to present their bids including two Chinese consortiums, an Italian-Korean consortium, and Dragados S.A., a subsidiary of Spanish construction group ACS. Ministry officials stated that the winning Chinese consortium- operating under the name ‘Consorcio Panamá Cuarto Puente’, offered the best overall technical and economical proposal, proposing a cost close to the tender’s reference price of US$1.42bn. Once completed, the project is expected to benefit over 1.7m users in the industrial and service sectors.
